Ana Castillo's novel So Far From God begins with the sentence, "La Loca was only three years old when she died." This statement is made magical three pages later when La Loca comes back to life during her own funeral. She opens her coffin and lifts herself into the air, only to land on the church roof. This is just one example of magical realism.

Magical realism is both a literary and writing style in fiction in which the author combines realism with imaginary or fantastical elements or images of which the reader is meant to take as "real." In this seminar, we'll discuss the history of magical realism, how to identify it in text, and the major players in this literary movement from Franz Kafka to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Toni Morrison, Isabel Allende, and Haruki Murakami. From there, attendees will try their hand at writing magical realism through a couple of short exercises, so they might return home and write their own magical realism short story or novel.
